How to Prep Your Home for an EV

2024 Blue Chevy Equinox EV

Prepare your home for an electric vehicle home charger after buying a hybrid electric vehicle for sale in American Fork. EVs have plenty of benefits, and they’re incredibly reliable. But to get the most out of your EV, it’s recommended that you set up an electric vehicle charging station in your garage or equivalent. Installing an at-home charging station gives you a reliable location to always charge your vehicle. We have the steps below to prepare your home for an electric vehicle.

1. Decide on a Charging Type

For your electric vehicle, charging batteries is a top priority just like how it’s important to keep your gas tank full in a gas-powered vehicle. Most home chargers use Level 1 EV charging or Level 2 EV charging. Here’s the difference between both below:

  • Level 1 EV charging takes more than a day generally to charge a car.
  • Level 2 EV charging takes several hours to fully charge an electric car. Usually, you can expect 60-200 miles of range on just 20 minutes of Level 2 DC charging.

2. Ready Your Provo or Mountain Garage for Your Station

Choose a dedicated location in your garage and clean up the area before installation. Take the time to plan out what’s going to work best for your vehicle and station.

3. Find the Power Panel & Assess Its Consumption

Your home’s power panel distributes electricity throughout your entire home. It should be rated for a maximum amount of current flow measured in Amperes. Many new homes come with a 100 Amp power panel. There should be an amperage rating printed on your main circuit breaker.

Next, perform a self-assessment to get a handle on how much electrical energy you consistently use in your home before installing an electric vehicle charging station. You just want to make sure not to overload your electrical distribution panel.

4. Hire an Electrician

An electrician can help you finalize your power station installation plan and make sure that your power consumption is good. You can also have them install a dedicated 240-volt plug or add a hardwired circuit back to the power panel. This can cost a couple of hundred dollars, but it could also be $1,000-$3,000 if your power panel is not sufficient as-is.

5. Buy Your Charger & Have it Installed

Now you’re good to buy your charger and have it set up! Generally, you can have a charger set up by the make of your new EV.
