How Long Does it Take to Charge an Electric Vehicle?

Charging Your Chevy at Home

When it comes to charging an electric vehicle, there are several different options. So, how long does it take to charge an electric car? There’s no universal answer to this question. It depends on the charging method you choose, as well as your car’s make and model. Plus, battery packs vary in terms of charging times. Generally, there are three methods of charging that EV drivers use to keep their vehicles “fueled.” Read on to learn more about electric car charging times and methods.

How Long to Charge an Electric Car: Levels 1, 2, & 3

How long does it take to charge an electric car? It depends on the charging method you use. Level 2 and Level 3 chargers are your best bet if you need a quick charge. Compare the charging times of the Level 1, 2, and 3 chargers:

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): Although it doesn’t offer fast charging, a regular grounded three-prong 110V/120V outlet can help you keep your car’s power level topped up. This method of charging is known as Level 1 charging and takes around 24 hours or more to deliver a full charge.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Level 2 charging uses rapid chargers — usually 240V+ — and is much faster than Level 1 charging. These types of chargers can be installed in a garage or another enclosed, weatherproof area. Using a Level 2 charger, you can expect to obtain an 80% charger in 30-40 minutes. The additional 20% will take longer because the charging rate diminishes after that initial 80%.
  3. Public Charging: Public charging stations, or Level 3 chargers, make it easy for you to charge on the go. You can search for public charging stations via a quick Google search, or you can use phone apps, such as PlugShare or Chargepoint. More charging stations are being added throughout the country every day.

Typical Domestic EV Charging Times

Again, car charging times vary depending on which charger you go for. Here’s a quick breakdown of how long each method takes:

  • Level 1 EV charging often takes 24+ hours to fully charge an electric car.
  • Level 2 EV charging takes hours to fully charge an electric car. Typically, a full night of Level 2 charging is enough to fully recharge an EV.
  • Level 3 EV charging can fully recharge most EVs in an hour or less, or add significant range in just ten minutes.

Typical Public EV Charging Times

Generally speaking, home chargers offer 3.7 kW or 7 kW charging. Public charging stations deliver 22 kW charging, 43-50 kW rapid charging, and 150 kW rapid charging. Depending on the make, model, and battery pack, some electric vehicles can reach a full charge in roughly an hour or so. Others can reach a full charge in 4-11 hours.
