What Color is Brake Fluid?

Brake fluid check

While most Lehi drivers know what brake fluid does, not everyone is aware of what brake fluid looks like. When caring for your vehicle, you want to make sure your brake fluid is the right color and filled properly. So what color is brake fluid and what should you look for when checking your fluid levels? Brake fluid should be a clear liquid with just a hint of yellow. Over time, this color and the viscosity of the fluid will change. Learn more about the color of brake fluid and more with our service team at Ken Garff Chevrolet today!

Why Do I Need Brake Fluid?

What is brake fluid and why do you need it? Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that keeps your vehicle’s braking system well lubricated. Not only does this help with the movement of the pedal but it lubricates the whole system to prevent corrosion as well as to ensure the heat from friction is at an all time low.

How Do I Check My Brake Fluid?

While it’s easier to let the experts take a look for you, you have the option to check your car’s brake fluid for yourself at home. And when you check the brake fluid regularly, you can easily tell if it looks normal and if it doesn’t. That means you won’t be surprised by sudden malfunctions and costly repairs. Here are the basic steps to check brake fluid levels at home:

  1. Pop the hood and look for the master cylinder to find your brake fluid reservoir. If you need help, your vehicle owner’s manual will have everything that you need.
  2. Look at the minimum and maximum lines on your fluid reservoir and make sure that the fluid falls in between. If it is under the minimum, it’s time for a top-off.
  3. Check the color of your car’s brake fluid. If it’s dark or oily, it’s time for a flush and replacement.
