Synthetic Oil vs. Regular Oil: What’s the Difference?

Service Technician changing the oil on a vehicle

At Ken Garff Chevrolet’s service center in American Fork, we want drivers to have the information they need to make the right choices for their vehicles. One of the questions we’re often asked is, “What’s the difference between synthetic oil and conventional oil?” Below, we cover the different aspects of regular and synthetic oil, as well as synthetic oil blends. Keep reading to learn more about the differences between synthetic vs. conventional oil.

What is Conventional (Regular) Oil?

Conventional oil has been used in combustion engines for decades. It’s a petroleum-based oil that’s made from crude oil that’s mined from the ground and refined. Motor oil has a couple of important jobs. For one, motor oil lubricates the engine’s moving parts to prevent friction and overheating. Engine oil also carries dirt and debris to the oil filter, which helps keep the engine clean.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Like regular oil, synthetic oil is petroleum-based, but it’s much more refined and was designed to be superior. Synthetic oil enhances lubrication properties, making it even more effective at pulling heat away from the engine. This is why synthetic oil is used in high-performance cars. Synthetic oil also lasts longer, allowing Lehi drivers to go further between oil changes. Synthetic oil also offers the following benefits:

  • Less viscous at higher temperatures
  • Enhanced cleaning properties
  • Offers better protection for turbocharger parts (when applicable)

How Do Full Synthetic vs. Synthetic Blends Differ?

Synthetic oil blends are the middle ground between synthetic oil and regular oil. Synthetic oil blends offer some of the performance benefits of full synthetic oil, but are more affordable — like conventional oil. Synthetic oil does cost more than conventional oil, because they last longer and perform better.

It’s important to note that synthetic oil blends aren’t compatible with all vehicles. Most new Chevys require synthetic oil, but you can ask one of the service technicians at Ken Garff Chevrolet if a synthetic oil blend will work for your car. Or, you can check your owner’s manual to see which oil grade is recommended for your Chevy.
