How Much Does it Cost to Replace Brake Pads?

Service Technician Working Under Vehicle

Routine vehicle maintenance includes many things, like oil changes, tire rotations, and yes, brake replacements. When it comes to car brakes, there are two main components, the brake rotors, and the brake pads. How much is it to replace just the brake pads? Generally speaking, it often costs around $150, but that’s not the whole picture. Learn more below with Ken Garff Chevrolet! Our service center is here to help however possible.

What’s the Average Cost to Replace Brake Pads?

Car brakes are different on different vehicles. They’re different sizes. They’re made of different quality materials. But on the whole, the average brake pad replacement cost generally runs from about $100 to $300 per axle, with many brake pad replacements costing somewhere around the neighborhood of $150. Keep in mind that more expensive composite brake pads offer greater heat resistance and less brake fade with routine use, even if they cost more initially. Here at Ken Garff Chevrolet, we stock only the highest-quality OEM Chevrolet parts, including brake pads.

Brakes vs. Brake Pads: What’s the Difference?

“Brakes” and “brake pads” are often used interchangeably. That said, there’s a clear difference between the two:

  • Brakes refer to the entirety of the vehicle’s brake system, which includes both pads and rotors as well as discs, calipers, the master cylinder, brake lines, and, if you drive an older vehicle, brake drums.
  • Brake pads are the part of your brake system that are squeezed into the rotor, applying the pressure and friction needed to make the vehicle stop. As such, they serve a huge function in promoting vehicle safety on Lehi and Pleasant Grove roads.

How Long Do Brake Pads Last?

Brake pads can last for up to 40,000 to 50,000 miles or longer! Some high-quality brake pads may even last up to 80,000 miles with very careful use. That said, most brake pads will last somewhere from 40,000 to 50,000 miles. Some can last less if you drive very aggressively. Because brake pads are a wearable item subject to the laws of physics, exactly how long they last will inevitably depend on you and your driving style.
